Package Holiday Deals

Are you taking a package holiday to Greece and thinking about which sites to visit?

Actually the country has such a storied history that what to see in Greece should not be a problem at all. You will want to start with the ancient period and the centre of ancient Greek culture – the Parthenon. This great temple was sacred to Athena, the goddess who bestowed her name on the city of Athens.

The Parthenon is located in the Acropolis, a site that hosts a number of other great attractions including the Erechtheion shrine and the National Archaeological Museum. While in Athens, you can also check out other great sites like Hadrian’s Arch, built by the Roman emperor Hadrian, and the Theater of Dionysus, an amphitheater where ancient dramas were enacted.

Not far from Athens is the theater of Epidaurus on the Peloponnese Peninsula. This theater is renowned for its perfect acoustics and if you visit at the right time you can enjoy the Epidaurus Festival. While in the Peloponnese, stop by the archaeological museum to view relics from the ancient Mycenaean culture.

Consider venturing to Delphi, the site of the Greek national oracle. The site hosts mysterious ruins and the Delphi Archaeological Museum.

Thessaloniki was Greece’s second city and here you can find the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum and a number of UNESCO-recognized Byzantine churches.

The city-state of Corinth gained fame during the period of the New Testament and the name is associated with great luxury. However, do not expect to find any “fine Corinthian leather” here. Instead be prepared to visit temples, ruins and the Acrocorinth, a fortress perched on a hilltop.

One of the birthplaces of European civilization is Knossos, the home of hoary Minoan civilization. The stunning Minoan Palace frescoes are well known among archaeologists and art-lover throughout the world. The Archaeological Museum here hosts many intriguing discoveries.

On the island of Santorini, you can explore the deep volcanic crater that some link to the legend of sunken Atlantis!

So now you know what to see in Greece!
